Family Befriending

Home-Start’s core Family Befriending service has a proven lasting impact on families lives.

Our network of over 100 trained and DBS checked volunteer befrienders visit families in their own homes, offering emotional and practical support to those who me be facing isolation, post-natal depression, disabilities, mental health issues, bereavement, the challenges of multiple births, financial difficulties or other challenges.

Volunteer befrienders offer personalised, non-judgemental support to families, helping them to link in with or access local services, as well as providing a listening ear, reassurance, support with children or a shoulder to cry on. Support is tailored to each family’s individual needs and circumstances and aims to empower and enable families to cope with the difficulties they face.

I have an absolutely amazing, loving, wonderful volunteer who comes to see me for two hours a week to help me… like going to the park or doing activities outside or providing advice on parenting or just having a chat.

I was suffering from isolation and severe depression. The volunteer helped make my life a lot better. It was less stressful knowing that I have someone to talk to. My kids and I always look forward to seeing her.
